Map Conversion

Converting a 226b map into a 225f map

If you are creating Unreal maps while using the 226b patch, you may or may not have noticed that other people using different patches will not be able to open your level :[ . This is because of a very slight (but significant) change to one of the level properties which is in all 226b related maps. To correct this you may do one of two things:

  1. Use one of the map coversion tools found in the mapping tools section and follow the directions found within the file (I have not tested these files). OR
  2. Manually convert the file by following the steps outlined below.

(Note: You may want to do this only when you are ready to release your map, since saving a 225f-converted file in a 226b version UnrealEd will automatically convert it back to 226b!)

Manual Conversion using frhed-v1.1

  1. Begin by downloading frhed-v1.1.zip and unzipping it wherever convenient.
  2. BACKUP YOUR LEVEL! (This may ruin your file if instructions are not followed correctly)
  3. Run Frhed and open your map in the program. (File -> Open -> Find your file).
  4. You should see a bunch of two-digit numbers grouped on the left and weird text lines on the right.
  5. Now go to Edit -> Find and type in "LevelSummary" (no quotes)
  6. Next go to Edit -> Replace
  7. In the replace window, type "SpecialEvent" (again no quotes) in the Replace with box and then hit replace!
  8. Save your level and you are done!

Fortunatly the words "LevelSummary" and "SpecialEvent" contain the same number of letters. If they did not, the "reading frame" of the hex-code would be thrown off and your file would be no good. Hope this worked for you! If you have any problems you can e-mail me and I will try to assist you. Cheers!
